Working With Lace | Bernina Sew N Quilt
Is there anything that can add a delicate touch to a project quite like lace? However, this delicate touch can also be notoriously difficult to work with.
So, let’s take some time to review some of the basics of sewing with lace:
Identify Your Lace
The first step to a project that incorporates lace is going to be to identify the type of lace that will work best for your project. Lace comes in a variety of textures that each lend themselves better to different needs.
If you’re looking for lace with lots of details, Chantilly lace is going to be your best bet. This feminine fabric is known for having a fine, detailed pattern over a mesh background and scalloped edges perfect for adding graceful accents to your project.
Guipure lace or Venetian lace is a great go-to for adding texture to a project. This is a heavier lace that has raised designs connected by threads, and can be used to add distinct shapes to your design in the form of overlays, accents or appliqués.
Need something that’s both delicate and ornate? Alencon lace is known for a fine mesh background with raised designs. The embroidered detail of this lace makes it very popular for wedding dresses!
Preparing Your Lace
Once you’ve selected your lace, there’s some prep work to be done! Lace can be a finicky material, so it’s especially important that you take the time to properly prepare before diving into your work.
First, pre-wash your lace fabric by soaking it in lukewarm water and then gently washing it by hand. Once lace has been washed, gently squeeze out any excess water and lay it flat to dry.
Next, carefully look over your lace to make sure that it’s in good condition and identify the right and wrong side. If your lace has wrinkles, you can remove them by ironing gently on the lowest heat setting.
Once your lace is clean and wrinkle-free, cut the lace into pieces needed for your project. You can use a rotary cutter or scissors to trim around the design elements of the lace, which will result in some beautiful organic edges that you can incorporate into what you’re making!
Finally, prepare your machine for sewing by installing a new needle and your thread of choice.
