What to Sew for Fall | Bernina Sew N' Quilt Studio

While temperatures may still be pushing the mercury north, the cooler days and crisp nights of autumn aren’t far away now. That means this is the perfect time to work on projects that will prepare you, those you love and even your home for the season to come.

Crafting, sewing and embroidery blogs across the internet catalog a ton of creative ideas that would make great projects, but who has time to sort through all those?

Fortunately, your friends at Bernina Sew N’ Quilt of Chattanooga combed through many of them to find some of our favorites. Presented here in no particular order are the projects that will have you in an autumn state of mind the whole season!

Some of Our Favorite Fall Projects

  • Cozy DIY Flannel Scarves from Delia Creates—This one is actually super simple and super cute. It’s a basic joining project and the tutorial is easy to follow. If you want to jazz it up a bit, try adding embellishments such as buttons, patches or fringe.

  • Scrap Buster Fall Pillow from Cluck Cluck Sew—If you’ve got a bunch of uneven quilt squares or other fabric scraps laying around, this is a great way to make something useful of them.

  • DIY Fabric Pumpkins from Positively Splendid—This is another great way to use up some excess fabric, but you can also use new fabric to make these too-adorable little pumpkins.

  • Cute Fall Apron Pattern from The Art of Home—Like that scarf at the top, this is another project that you can enhance as much or as little as you want and in any way you can imagine.

  • Draped in Plaid + Cape Tutorial from Elle Apparel—This is another simple project that results in a great, functional piece of clothing. It’s a cape, it’s a drape, it’s a shawl; you could probably even clip it up and make it into a skirt if you want!

  • Fall Leaf Embroidery Pattern from Cutesy Crafts—This is a little pattern that you can use as a decoration in its own right or as an embellishment to any of the other projects here or one of your own.

  • Homemade Rice Heating Pack from Third Stop on the Right—There’s nothing specifically fall about this one, but it’s exactly what you’ll reach for after every long day of raking leaves.

  • Reusable Hand Warmers from Sadie Seasongoods—This is a similar idea, but a different purpose and one you’ll really appreciate for football games in late fall (assuming we get those again eventually), hayrides and any other time you’re out in the cool. Plus, we love the suggestion of upcycling old flannel shirts!

  • Owl Hooded Towels from Crazy Little Projects—If you’ve been around a little one after bath time or through the baby section at a department store lately, you’ve likely seen those adorable hooded towels that make tots look like cute critters. Now, you can make your own with this project!
