What the Beginner Sewer Needs to Get Started | Bernina Sew N Quilt Studio
“The expert at anything was once a beginner.”—Helen Hayes
We usually use our blogging space to spread the word about fun projects and interesting ideas for those who have been sewing for a while. But we also recognize that each one of us was once a beginner!
Every so often in our studio, we share the joys of sewing and quilting with someone who’s just getting started, whether they’re young in age or just young at heart.
If you’re just beginning, this blog is for you! Read on as we share some insight about what you’ll need to get started.
The Sewing Essentials
While what you’ll need is somewhat dependent on how involved you’re going to be in sewing right off the bat, there are some basics that every sewer needs:
Scissors. And no, not your standard kitchen scissors. Look for a good pair of sturdy scissors that will be used solely for the purpose of cutting fabric. This is important, because when you use scissors to cut multiple materials, the scissors can dull and won’t cut fabric smoothly.
A cutting board. Much like a cutting board in the kitchen, the point of one in your sewing space is also to protect the surface underneath when you’re cutting. You can choose a very basic one that simply covers the surface, or you can find one that has built-in rulers or lines that help guide your cutting.
Measuring tape. “Measure twice, cut once,” as the saying goes. You’ll want a handy measuring tape to quickly measure out how much needs to be cut.
Thread. Your possibilities are endless here! When you’re just getting started, invest in some basic colors such as white, gray, black and beige. From there, you can build a larger stock of colors for your individual projects.
Sewing needles. Here you need to look for two different types of needles—you’ll want hand sewing needles and you’ll want the needles designed for use in a sewing machine.
Sewing machine. And last but not least, you’ll want to purchase a sewing machine. These come in all varieties for every skill set and ability. Talk with one of our sales professionals about your sewing goals and what you might need to set you up for success.
