Spring-Clean Your Space | Bernina Sew N Quilt Studio
Spring is just around the corner, and it’s bringing with it a new season of regeneration and renewal. Time to get prepared for a season of new projects with a refreshed workspace!
Check out these tips for spring-cleaning your crafting space.
Start by Cleansing Your Fabric
No, we don’t mean washing the fabric. Instead, start your cleaning process by first going through your fabric stash.
Begin by going through all of your fabric—especially the ones at the bottom of your bin or the back of your closet that you might have forgotten about! Place the fabrics you love the most in a place where they’ll be top of mind, and donate or sell the ones that you don’t need or don’t like.
Once you’ve sorted through the stash, it’s time to go through the scraps! Add the large scraps that you don’t have a purpose for to the donate pile, and keep your favorite scraps in a special storage space so they’ll be ready for the next time you need patches or want to make a scrap quilt.
We recommend that you keep your fabrics in clear bins or mesh drawers or baskets, so that you can easily see what fabrics you have and can keep your stash top of mind when thinking about your next projects! Sorting fabric stash by color will look nice and give you an idea of what colors you have and what colors you need still.
A Place for Everything
Going through all the fabric is only the first step to organizing a craft space. Once you’ve found a place for all your fabric, use the momentum to find a place for everything else!
Start by taking your newly sorted fabrics, sewing machine, tools, threads and notions out of your space, and taking stock of what you have—and what your space looks like. Look over your supplies and determine what gets used the most and what gets used the least.
Store your most needed items—such as scissors, needles, threads and pins—front and center where they’re easily accessed. Keep your threads, fabrics and frequently used notions in a highly visible spot so that you can see your supplies and easily grab what you need for your project.
Find a place for the less frequently used items, like patterns, backing and filling, further back or further up in your space. You should know exactly where these items are, but they don’t need to be highly visible like the frequently used materials.
