Family Quilting Projects
School will be out for the summer soon! That means that it’s time for family fun, and an awesome opportunity to get your little ones involved in some fun sewing and quilting projects!
Tips for Teaching
The first part of taking on any project with your kids is teaching them how. It’s exciting to be able to spread the joy of your craft with your little ones, but it’s important to practice patience and to not force it! Quilting projects with your child should be fun and exciting for all parties involved. You can increase the fun for the little ones by letting them choose the project. Make sure to provide a small range of age-appropriate ideas so that they don’t become overwhelmed or bite off more than they can chew. Once you’ve got your project picked out, take it easy and work with your child to show the basic functions of your sewing machine and other tools and materials. Make sure that your child is involved in a safe and age-appropriate way. Handle what you feel comfortable handling and keep your child engaged. When they’re done for the day, put this project away so you can work on it another day!
Project Ideas
Chances are, if this is your first time sewing with your little one, you’re not going to be working on a full-size quilt this year. You’ll want to start with some smaller, quilting-focused projects that will keep your children engaged and provide them with the skills that they’ll need for working on larger projects in the future. Creating small pillows or tote bags with felt appliqués can make great projects for young beginners. Older children may enjoy more complex drawstring bags or messenger bags, or even small quilts for doll beds or wall hangings. Or, if this isn’t your first rodeo, you can select a simple patchwork quilt pattern with fabrics that your child loves and work together on it for a little bit each day!
